Idyllium – Nigel Coates – Set 1

The Idyllium collection is the first ceramic tableware designed by the architect and designer Nigel Coates. Inspired by the possibilities of handmade ceramics in the Amalfi tradition, the collection reflects the designer’s fascination with ancient artefacts and the archetypes that inhabit our imagination. Each plate is about impulse and universality, an idyllic state of being.

Simple and earthy in their outline and feel, the sweep of black across a white base expresses the naivety and immediacy of a gesture of the artist’s brush. In addition, the different marks on each plate reveal a primal sign. They can be a man, a woman, a tree, a face, a body; they are primitive images open to interpretations. The result is a creative and playful collection complimented by the bold yellow of the Amalfi sun.
